Hilltop Radio No.67

Forecast: “…And I Come Home On Saturday Morning”

Basically, the flipside to last night’s mix. And this one is more of a Saturday morning track list. I guess I could have started with something from Hope Sandoval’s excellent new album, but this Mazzy Star track has been haunting me since it was used on Rick and Morty. Cowboy Junkies are always good morning fare, or late night fare. Some Françoise Hardy to give the mix some class, followed by class act Elvis (now with added Royal Philharmonic Orchestration!) and then 70s variety show staple, Paul Williams. Margo Guryan follows with the song that got Lenny Bruce into a little hot water. The Troggs sing of Cousin Jane, very early Genesis sings of A Winter’s Tale (hopefully the last winter song for a while), and then a Manfred Mann piece that falls between their Mighty Quinn and “wrapped up like a deuce” period. Hello Sunshine and Golden Sun are both relatively obscure 70s songs. Mark Kozelek & Rachel Goswell pay tribute to 70s icon John Denver. You know Chubby Checker wasn’t always about the twist. Then Sandy Posey because… Sandy Posey! Beach Boys because… Dennis Wilson! Coming Home is from the soundtrack to Roy Orbison’s starring vehicle, The Fastest Guitar Alive. Then a few covers. Iron & Wine doing Cyndi Lauper and a couple by Neko Case and Elvis Costello from HBO’s Vinyl show. A new one from Bettie Serveert and an old one from Cher (and the Muscle Shoals crew). Moody Blues’ Have You Heard has been in heavy rotation since I heard it on Marvel Agents Of Shield. Alexis Taylor finishes up with a track from Piano.

Hilltop Radio No.66

Forecast: “I Go Out On Friday Night…”

Well, I guess that’s not really accurate anymore, but there was a time when it was quite true.  And when it was true, these would have been the songs I was listening to.  The mix starts with pure dance floor tracks, but really, in the eighties everything was a dance floor track.
